A kiss-cut sticker is cut only through the vinyl layer — the blade "kisses" the backing paper without cutting through it. Your design still peels out in its exact shape, but it sits on a rectangular backing that stays intact. From the front, applied to a laptop or bumper, the two are identical. The difference only exists before peeling.
So when does kiss-cut win? Three cases. First, intricate designs: thin script lettering, fine details, or narrow connecting pieces peel more cleanly from a kiss-cut backing without tearing. Second, handing them out: the extra backing gives people something to hold, and you can print your brand or contact info on the backing border itself. Third, sticker sheets — multiple designs on one sheet are kiss-cut by definition, so each one peels off individually.
Die-cut wins on presentation. It looks sharper in hand, photographs better for product shots, and feels more premium as merch or packaging seals. If your design has a clean silhouette — a logo, a badge, a wordmark — die-cut is almost always the right call.
